Why Rajasthan
Rajasthan supplies roughly 90% of India's commercially-quarried sandstone. The geological reason: a sedimentary basin spanning Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Sirohi, Bharatpur and into Madhya Pradesh, with active deposits in five distinct stone families and at least twenty named varieties.
The commercial reason: a quarrying industry built over 200 years, fabrication infrastructure in Kishangarh and Udaipur, and a well-developed export ecosystem that moves containers to Europe, the US, the GCC and Australia weekly.
Jaisalmer Yellow
Quarried near Jaisalmer in western Rajasthan. A warm yellow sandstone with subtle banding, sometimes with fossil shell traces visible in cross-section. The stone is famously used in the Jaisalmer fort and the older city architecture.
Best for: warm-toned façade cladding, pool surrounds in hot climates (low heat retention), traditional Indian project briefs. Honed finish recommended for outdoor use — the natural cleft can be too rough for foot traffic.
Dholpur — Pink and Beige
Quarried near Dholpur in eastern Rajasthan. Two main commercial varieties: Dholpur Pink (a soft rose-tone) and Dholpur Beige (a paler cream). Both have excellent weather resistance and have been used in major Indian heritage structures.
Best for: residential and commercial façade cladding, patio paving, garden walls. Particularly successful in projects targeting a 'desert-architecture' aesthetic.
Kota Stone — technically limestone, locally called sandstone
Worth a clarification: 'Kota Stone' is technically limestone, not sandstone, despite the local terminology and trade conflation. It is quarried in the Kota region of Rajasthan. The two commercial varieties — Kota Blue (a blue-grey) and Kota Mix (a natural blend with brown tones) — are widely specified for indoor flooring, particularly in commercial buildings and middle-income residential.
Best for: indoor commercial flooring, balcony and verandah paving, poolside (the natural surface is non-slip). Honed finish for indoor use, natural cleft for outdoor.
Agra Red and Sagar Black
Slightly outside the Rajasthan core but commercially in the same trade flow. Agra Red is a rich red sandstone from Uttar Pradesh, the stone of the Red Fort and Akbar's tomb at Sikandra. Sagar Black is a deep black sandstone from Madhya Pradesh — a striking contrast piece.
Best for: heritage-style architecture (Agra Red), contemporary contrast features and entry pavers (Sagar Black). Both ship widely for landscape architecture overseas.
Sourcing logistics for an export project
Indian sandstone is shipped as cut-to-size pavers, blocks, or as random-shaped 'cobble' style flagstones. Container loading: a 20-foot container holds roughly 25–28 tonnes of sandstone product, which equates to around 250–300 sq m of paving in 22 mm thickness.
Lead time from quarry to fabrication to container loading is typically 3–4 weeks for in-stock varieties, longer for custom sizes or large-volume orders. Specify finish (natural cleft, honed, sandblasted, sawn), edge treatment (sawn or split), and thickness tolerance up-front. The wrong spec causes the most delay.
